GTJ 1:1 (Spr 1980) p. 93 throughout the OT but is much more frequent in Jeremiah.52 This calls for special attention to the term.53 The term means “deceit, falsehood.”54 However, very often the term is set in a legal context. If such is the case, one would expect Jeremiah to employ the term within its legal setting and perhaps build upon and enlarge it.55 This is especially important in light of Jeremiah’s self-analysis that he is always indicting and accusing his people (note רִיב, 15:10).56
